The Artist

Perdition Pottery was founded in 2022 by Nicole Chapman with a desire to make accessible, creative work that incorporates fine art and function.

I walk the line with each piece I create, remaining mindful not to create art just for shock or show, but to create something honest and unsettling. I don’t want to push the viewer away, but rather I want to push them closer to invite conversation and conflicted emotions all in the same space.

The Inspiration

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.”

In my work I draw inspiration from the words of great writers, the tension of the horror genera, and the rich texture of religious relics. In the overlap of these influences I worked to create the possibility for elegance and grotesque to exist together.

The Material

Clay is my medium of choice as the idea of its permanence in an impermanent world is appealing to me. Clay is a fickle material that remembers every movement the hand makes, often forcing humility when a piece ends with unexpected results. This grants us the opportunity to embrace the idea that nothing is precious.

I utilize stoneware and porcelain in both my fine art and functional work. Often in my fine art I will incorporate other materials such as metals or fabric in the creation process to see how they interact with the clay and the firing environment.

All of my functional work is food safe and intended for everyday interaction. While it can be placed in the dishwasher hand washing will prolong the life of the piece.
